Schwerin, Germany
2025

A symbol of the city and a masterpiece of European eclectic architecture, Schwerin Castle rises from a small island in the center of Lake Schweriner See, connected to the mainland by scenic bridges that enhance its fairytale charm. With its soaring towers, ornate spires, onion-shaped golden domes and terracotta façades, the castle is a unique blend of French Renaissance style and decorative elements characteristic of Eastern Europe and the Baltic region. Inside, it houses over 650 elegantly furnished rooms and is surrounded by an expansive English-style park featuring pergolas, canals, flower gardens, fountains and an Orangerie filled with rare plants from around the world.

Since 2024, the entire complex has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding cultural and architectural value. However, Schwerin Castle isn’t merely a witness to the past: it also serves as the seat of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regional parliament and hosts one of the most visited museums in the area, attracting around 200,000 visitors per year. The building’s wide range of functions thus demands a sophisticated technological infrastructure that ensures safety and operational efficiency while preserving the integrity of its historical environment.

To meet these complex needs, GEWISS supplied over 1,500 devices from its ReStart AUTOTEST series: advanced automatic reclosing systems that deliver smart control and maximum operational reliability. Thanks to patented technology, each device performs an automatic self-test every 28 days without cutting power and restores current only when insulation conditions are verified as safe. This feature makes ReStart AUTOTEST an ideal solution for intricate settings like Schwerin Castle, where environmental sensitivity and uninterrupted service are constant challenges.

GEWISS devices are fully integrated into the existing KNX supervision system, which continuously manages lighting, shading, ventilation, climate control, heating, security, communication and broadcasting technology. The ReStart AUTOTEST units enable real-time monitoring of system status, immediate fault visualization and logging of all test and reset operations. Their compact design also allowed for seamless installation within the original electrical panels, avoiding invasive modifications and respecting the existing architectural fabric.

With the project developed for Schweriner Schloss, GEWISS has demonstrated its ability to operate in environments of great historical and cultural significance, delivering technological solutions that protect and enhance the architectural context. A truly exemplary intervention that harmoniously combines innovation, safety and heritage preservation.
